Centreville’s Tim Vigotsky made a strong run to the finals of the Virginia Senior Amateur, eliminating players such as Jack Vardaman, former Virginia Amateur champion Pat Talent, and former Virginia Senior Amateur winner Mike McDonald. But in the title match, Vigotsky ran into one of the most decorated amateurs in the state, falling to David Partridge of Manakin, 5 and 4, at the Homestead’s storied Cascades course.
The 57-year-old Vigotsky was one down through seven holes, but couldn’t withstand a flurry by Partridge, 56, who won four of the next five holes to capture the title in his second year of eligibility. Partridge has two Virginia Amateur (1993, 1995) and three Virginia Mid-Am titles (1988, 1993, 2006) on his resume.
It was a spectacular week for Partridge, the medalist who shot a 65 in the second round of qualifying, playing in the same group as amateur legend Vinny Giles, winner of a record seven state Amateur titles.
Vigotsky had a week to remember as well.
“I’m a little disappointed in myself because I didn’t elevate my game enough to compete in the final,” Vigotsky told Andrew Blair of the VSGA. “I started to feel things going in the wrong direction at the end on Thursday, so when you have some doubts already, you think, ‘Oh boy.’ You have to fight yourself and a true champion in David.”
