Can’t wait for the first re-entry draft

As we anxiously await the details of the labor agreement that was agreed to by Major League Soccer and its players over the weekend, a couple quick thoughts:

The MLS Players Union and the league itself were both too smart to let a strike happen. There was a ton of credit given to George H. Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and it’s clear that the two sides were very entrenched. But a deal had to be worked out so both sides didn’t get dragged through the mud. Everyone knew that a work stoppage was the worst possible outcome, and I certainly thought it unlikely.

Soccer America says the new salary cap for this season is $2.55 million.

So bring on the re-entry draft, right? It would be a great addition to the MLS SuperDraft, which takes , at the very least since the SuperDraft is hardly worth paying attention to after the first round. Case in point: Drew Yates, who was taken in the second round by Chicago but is now on trial with D.C. United. And wouldn’t it be great to have the out-of-contract/unwanted players come and sit in the audience, then come up to the stage and receive a new scarf to raise when they get their names called?
