Draft blows talent both up and down

The fun part with the NFL draft — one week away and counting — is to see which guys fall and which players go higher than expected. Because we’ve placed a one-day moratorium on quarterbacks, we’ll take a look at three guys who will be interesting to watch next week:

Eric Berry » The Tennessee safety long has been mentioned in the top 10 and usually around the top five. However, there are scouts and draft experts who consider Texas safety Earl Thomas to be a better player. Berry often has been projected to Kansas City at No. 5, but NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said he doubts the Chiefs will take a safety that high. If Cleveland doesn’t pick Berry, he could slip to Jacksonville at No. 10.

Dez Bryant » The receiver is too talented to have a severe drop. And more and more whispers have come out that while his off-field issues are horrendous, teams don’t view it as a harbinger. The interesting part is to see whether Denver, which just traded head case Brandon Marshall, will take Bryant, who played at Oklahoma State, if he’s available at No. 11.

Jared Odrick » One general manager called the Penn State defensive tackle “as safe a pick with talent as you’ll get on the board. He’ll be a real good to Pro Bowl type of pro.” If that’s the case, then don’t be surprised if he goes higher than anticipated. Most mock drafts have him at the lower end of the first round. But if some players fall, others will rise. Odrick could be that guy.
