Lewis comes out roaring

An often passionate and sometimes-bristly Ray Lewis spoke to the media Wednesday for the first time since two controversial television interviews aired earlier this spring.

The Ravens linebacker said interviews on ComcastSportsNet and ESPN misrepresented his feelings about head coach Brian Billick, his team and his place with the franchise.

“No matter what I say, if I?m wrong or right … I?m not a perfect man,” Lewis said.

“My apology was to my teammates because I spoke about something that I probably shouldn?t have spoken about. You see my job is to come back and always try to be better by any means necessary,” he added.

Lewis had said in an ESPN interview that the team had not allowed him to be as dominant in recent years as he was earlier in his career. Lewis became edgy as questions arose later in the news conference to further clarify those comments.

“There?s no need because there?s no relevance in me trying to explain to you all what you all will never understand,” Lewis told the media. “You all will never understand what we go through on the football field ever. Ever. I can work with any person here. But, at the same time, I am not going to keep digging up the same issues over and over. It?s boring.”

Lewis said he has spoken with the team?s management what it is doing to improve on last year?s 6-10 record.

“I?ve looked eye-to-eye with (general manager) Ozzie Newsome and talked about how we?re going to get better and where we?re going. I?ve looked eye-to-eye with Steve Bisciotti and said, ?How are we going to do this? Where are we going?? I?ve looked eye-to-eye with these men,” Lewis said.

There was a palpable sense during the new conference that Lewis was trying to reclaim the city he has basically owned for the last decade.

“My job, for me, like I said from day one is to my organization for one simple reason. I?ve devoted my football career to my organization. I?ve devoted what I do to my fans and every time I walk out there I walk with my city on my back,” Lewis said.

Lewis said he was encouraged by the team?s off-season moves. But rumors circulated that Lewis was displeased with his current contract.

“When I do ain?t about money,” Lewis said. “I don?t do it for that. I don?t. When I wake up, I wake up to be the best.”
