Orioles manager Dave Trembley made his point clear about the possibility of top catching prospect Matt Wieters playing in the majors during the next five weeks.
“It’s his first year as a pro baseball player, above and beyond everything,” Trembley said. “There’s no reason for him to come up here this September.”
But when the Orioles roster expands from 25 to 40 players on Sept. 1, the big league club figures to call up a few of its budding prospects. Possible pitchers to be promoted include right-handers Bob McCroy and Andy Mitchell from Triple-A Norfolk, and Brad Bergesen from Double-A Bowie. McCroy is more of a reliever (3.83 ERA, five saves), while Mitchell (12-7, 4.37 ERA) and Bergesen (15-5, 3.11 ERA) figure to get a start if they make their way to Camden Yards.
Bowie outfielder Nolan Reimold is the top position player possibly headed to Baltimore. He’s been plagued by injuries for most of his career, but has shown sparks of power in Bowie, where he’s batting .282 with 20 home runs and 75 RBI.
