Navy guard Sugars joins POY McCollum of Lehigh on first team

American University and Navy have been picked to finish in fifth- and seventh-place respectively in the Patriot League by coaches and sports information directors.

Navy senior guard Jordan Sugars, a 6-3 guard from Winchester, was a first-team preseason choice, joining Lehigh junior C.J. McCollum, Bucknell junior Mike Muscalla, Holy Cross senior Devin Brown, and Lafayette junior Tony Johnson on the first team. Two-time conference player of the year McCollum was the no-surprise preseason choice to capture the honor for an unprecedented third time.

With 14 first-place votes, defending champion Bucknell was the runaway choice to repeat, followed by Lehigh (two first-place votes), Holy Cross, Lafayette, American, Colgate, Navy, and Army. Bucknell’s choice was unanimous as coaches and SIDs were not permitted to pick their own school.

American (2008-09) was the last school to be unanimously chosen in the preseason between winning back-to-back conference titles. On Wednesday night, AU announced that 11-year head coach Jeff Jones had signed a contract extension through the 2015-16 season. Jones has guided the Eagles to three 20-win seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances in the last four years.
