On Monday, French Ambassador Pierre Vimont invited 40 wounded troops from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to an elegant dinner at the French Embassy. Vimont spoke of strong Franco-U.S. relations — despite the two country’s differences over the war in Iraq — and he expressed his thanks to the United States for its role in helping to liberate France from Nazi control during World War II.

Some notable VIPs in attendance: Sen. John Warner, Army Surgeon General Eric Schoomaker and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. S. Ward Casscells.

The kind gesture by Vimont wasn’t lost on the troops: Longtime White House reporter Connie Lawn, who was in attendance, told Yeas & Nays: “The warriors especially enjoyed the French red wine. … A few of the soldiers walked off with ceremonial, empty bottles.”
