George Mason defeats Old Dominion, 61-53
Darryl Monroe had his third straight double-double as George Mason remained perfect at home and in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 61-53 win over Old Dominion on Saturday.
Monroe scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Patriots (12-3, 5-0) remained tied atop the conference standings with Northeastern. George Mason, which won for the ninth straight time at home, has won four straight games and seven of its last eight overall.
Ben Finney had 16 points and Gerald Lee added 15 points for the Monarchs (9-6, 2-3), who dropped their second straight game.
Old Dominion drew to within four points with just under five minutes to play, but a 3-pointer by Cam Long and a tip-in by Monroe helped push the lead back to 55-46. George Mason, which limited the Monarchs to 38 percent shooting from the field, has held 11 straight opponents under 70 points.
Florida A&M defeats Howard, 79-74, in overtime
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – David Buchanon scored 14 of his 17 points in overtime to lead Florida A&M to a 79-74 win over Howard on Saturday night.
Buchanon made three 3-pointers during an 80-second stretch in overtime to give the Rattlers (3-10, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a nine-point lead. His four free throws in the final 14 seconds sealed Florida A&M’s first conference victory of the season.
Howard (1-13, 0-2) suffered its 13th consecutive loss after Kyle Riley made two free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation tied the score at 61-61 to forced overtime.
Riley was fouled by Yannick Crowder while battling for a pass after Ballard made the second of two free throws to put the Rattlers in front, 61-59.
Eugene Myatt led Howard with 22 points, while Riley finished with 15 after being held scoreless in the first half.
