Thus did Radio One and XM Radio personality Joe Madison introduce actress Mia Farrow (and elevate her status) at a protest in front of the Chinese Embassy Monday afternoon. The activists object to the Chinese government’s support for the regime in Sudan and the killing in Darfur as China prepares to host the 2008 Olympics.
Clad in a wool cap and fresh off her seventh trip to Darfur, Farrow said, “Don’t let this be a genocide Olympics. There is a window, my brothers and sisters. Let’s get behind that window and push the Chinese.”
Also marching and chanting: “West Wing” star Melissa Fitzgerald and four former Olympians.
Nathaniel Mills, a two-time U.S. Olympian in speed skating who now teaches in the Washington area, said, “I come here as witness to Olympism, to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind.”
Joining him were Nikki Stone, a 1998 gold medalist in aerial skiing; Vince Poscente, a 1992 gold medalist in speed skiing from Canada; and Joey Cheek, a 2006 gold medalist in speed skating.
As for the embassy, its problems weren’t over. As the Darfur protesters were wrapping up, a group of Vietnamese activists waited patiently in line behind them to stage a protest of their own.
