Rooney might have to get his kicks elsewhere

Wearing his Manchester United shirt, Wayne Rooney has done nothing lately but score, with an English Premier League-leading nine goals in six matches. Thanks to his behavior while wearing his England shirt, the Premier League might be the only place Rooney gets to play.

After getting sent off for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic in England’s 2-2 draw at Montenegro last week, the 25-year-old striker was handed a three-match ban for the start of next summer’s European Championships.

The suspension keeps him out of the entire group stage, forcing England coach Fabio Capello to consider whether to name Rooney to his 23-man roster at all. Capello said he will consider leaving Rooney out of upcoming friendlies to study other attacking options.

England, which qualified handily for Euro 2012, must name its team by May 28. By then, with his current league form, Rooney could have another historic season under his belt. Will be Capello brave or stupid enough to let Rooney’s summer start early?
