So it appears that Tom Brady did know that he was throwing softballs. As John Branch of the New York Times reports

On Wednesday, the N.F.L. released its report on the inquiry into New England’s surreptitious deflation of game-day footballs to make them easier to grip, a program uncovered during January’s A.F.C. championship game. Using detailed accounts and circumstantial evidence, it implicated Brady as part of the operation, saying he most likely knew that the two employees, McNally, 48, and Jastremski, then 35, were purposely deflating footballs, for Brady’s benefit, to a level beyond the permissible threshold.

There is much to savor in the Times story. The nickname, for instance, of the locker room attendant to did the actual crime. He called himself “the deflator.” And for his services, he was rewarded by another Patriot employee with:

… memorabilia, including shoes and autographed footballs.

As for Tom Brady, one of the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL:

… investigators implied that Brady had lied when he denied any knowledge of the operation

And engaged in what we like to call a “cover-up” as well by refusing to provide investigators with

… documents or electronic information, such as text messages.

Brady should have followed the old Richard Petty rule. If you are going to cheat, then “cheat neat.”

Now, he will be the quarterback who won four Super Bowls … but …
