Green considers D.C. his football home

Before Trent Green left for Redskins training camp in 1998, he offered his wife a pessimistic take on his career.

“I had told her my career was over,” said Green, who had attempted one pass in his four previous seasons.

Turns out it was just his Redskins’ career that would soon be ending.

Though he spent his first season in San Diego, he considers Washington his football home. It’s where his son was born and it’s where he first made a name for himself in 1998, starting 15 games, throwing 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. With the franchise up for sale, Green left via free agency.

“That would have been something special,” said Green, now Miami’s starting quarterback. “I would have loved to have spent my whole career there. … I was there for the last game at RFK and first game at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. I have great memories from there.”

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron served as Washington’s quarterbacks coach in Green’s first two seasons.

“Trent would have made it somewhere,” Cameron said. “He has that inner drive. It’s tough to get those guys to go away; they keep knocking at your door.”
