Georgia State University Panthers quarterback Mikele Colasurdo will not be playing football this season after being diagnosed with a heart condition related to contracting the coronavirus.
Colasurdo, a freshman, is a three-star prospect out of South Carolina. He praised the Georgia State medical staff for his care.
“Ultimately it was the procedures and tests set forth by GSU that allowed the doctors to find this condition in my heart and help keep me safe. I am very thankful,” Colasurdo wrote on Twitter. “I can’t wait to watch my team compete this fall.” He also thanked his coach, Shawn Elliott, and the training staff.
In early August, Debbie Rucker revealed that her son, Brady Feeney, an offensive lineman at Indiana University, was struggling with heart problems after contracting COVID-19.
GSU plays in the Sun Belt Conference, which, unlike the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences, has not suspended its season in response to the coronavirus. The Panthers open their season on Sept. 19 against Louisiana-LaFayette.
