Meg Giusti found her home course to her liking Monday and Tuesday, winning the 42nd Maryland Senior Women’s Open at Montgomery Country Club.
It was the third title in four years for the 54-year-old Giusti (73-71 – 144), who emerged by eight strokes over Lisa Schlesinger (79-73 – 152) of Norbeck. Her 71 bested her own course record by one stroke. Her 144 beat her own tournament record (2007), also by one shot.
After making 10 straight pars on Tuesday, Giusti drained a birdie putt of at least 30 feet at No. 16, before finishing with two more pars.
“I listened to my husband for the first time in 25 years,” joked Giusti to John Stewart of the Maryland State Golf Association. “He gave me a putting tip and corrected my alignment.”
The result for Giusti, a physical education teacher at Wheaton High, has been a drop in handicap from a 4 to a 2. She was runner up in the event last year, by one stroke, to Dianne Herndon after back-to-back victories in 2007 and 2008.
