Yesterday I wrote in my column that the Ravens wanted and felt they needed a signature win, a win that made a statement.
On the Ravens first play Ray Rice took the ball on a simple straight up the gut play and 83 yards later was standing in the New England end zone. That was followed by a Le’Ron McClain 1 yard run that was set up a Terrell Suggs fumble recovery, then another Rice TD from a yard out that was set up by an interception by Chris Carr and to cap off the first quarter there was a 27 yard Billy Cundiff field goal set up by an Ed Reed pick.
The statement was made in less than 15 minutes — a 24-0 Baltimore lead at the end of first quarter against a New England team that had gone 18 years without a home playoff loss.
The Rice 83-yard opening touchdown was the knockout punch to be sure.
As a matter of fact, not since Mike Tyson KO’d Michael Spinks 90 seconds into the first round in June 1988 to win the IBF title have I seen a major sporting event over so soon.
Next up a primetime meeting Saturday night with the Colts in Indianapolis on CBS at 8 p.m. much more all week here on WashingtonExaminer.com.
