After dispatching nine straight opponents by 10 or more runs, all the Sherwood softball team was looking for this week was a little competition — and seven full innings of work.
Tuesday the Warriors got it in the form of undefeated, perennial power Damascus. Sherwood’s 6-2 road victory was proof that the No. 6 Warriors (11-0) could rise to a challenge.
“It was a huge confidence boost,” said catcher Katie Obal. “That was the biggest competition we’ll have in the county. When you’re winning games easily, you can get a little complacent.”
When Sherwood last played at Damascus, in the 2005 region final, the Warriors suffered a wrenching 5-4 loss after taking a lead into the seventh inning. Tuesday’s win was a small dose of exorcism.
“We got the lead and this time we held it,” said Obal. “Doing it against that team really sets us on course for the rest of the season.”
As they have all season, Obal and left-handed pitcher Dana Ward were the catalysts for coach Pat Flanagan’s team. While Obal had a double and single and contributed her customary stellar work behind the plate, Ward pitched a two-hitter, fanned 11, and supplied the key hit, a three-run homer.
With five no-hitters, eight shutouts, and three earned runs yielded, Ward is in the midst of a third straight dominating season. Since moving to the mound in her sophomore season, Ward is 34-4 with 470 strikeouts. Her catcher throughout that period has been Obal (.457).
“She’s great behind the plate, calling my pitches, keeping me under control,” said Ward. “It just so happens that she’s like my best friend.”
It’s hardly a two-girl team. Centerfielder Kelly Morrow (.531) has scored 17 runs from her leadoff slot. First baseman Shannon Price (.353) hit home runs last week against Springbrook and Blake. Shortstop Taylor Stockinger (.394) drove in a pair of runs against Damascus.
“My teammates are backing me up so well this year,” said Ward. “Even if I’m a little off, I know they’ll make the plays and get big hits.”
