Americans hope that their elected officials stick to their principles and don’t give in to pressure from outside forces.

Well, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is no such politician and she conceded as much on Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO.

She’s the only female Democratic senator pulling for Barack Obama rather than Hillary Clinton. How did she come to her decision?

“With a little nudging from my 18-year-old daughter,” McCaskill told Maher. She was “in my face, saying, ‘How can you look at yourself in the mirror! You’re a slug! You’re playing it politically safe! … I’ll never speak to you again if you don’t stand up and have some courage!’ ”

“It was pretty intense,” McCaskill said, recalling the moment. “And she was right. It was like a cold bucket of water on my head.”

But perhaps Maher made the most important point: “Wait, you let your daughter call you a slug?!?”
