European-style soccer in area

A little of European soccer has come to the region this week.

Wednesday night perennial Scottish power and current Scottish champions Celtic played an exhibition match against D.C. United at RFK Stadium.

Celtic have been playing competitive soccer since 1888, and were the first club in the British Isles to win the European club championship.

Their current squad includes many world-class players including Shaun Maloney, last season?s Scottish Player of the Year, and Artur Boruc, Poland?s starting goalkeeper.

Celtic?s fans travel uncommonly well and are among the most vocal in the world. So in addition to the play on the field, the spectacle in the stands should be very entertaining.

On Saturday, English squad Crystal Palace will be inaugurating their recent foray into U.S. youth soccer with an exhibition match against their developmental team at the Naval Academy.

Crystal Palace is a west-London team more than a centuryold, and who most recently narrowly missed promotion to England?s premiere soccer league. Crystal Palace also fields a team of excellent players, including Clinton Morrison, an Irish international.

Tickets can be purchased online at crystalpalaceusa.com or at the gate. In any event, because the match will be on USNA grounds, a photo identification card will also be required for admission to the grounds.
