Say this about Nick Clooney: The guy knows his place in the pecking order.

The onetime journalist/politician — and, more importantly, the father of George Clooney — was in town Wednesday night for the 2008 Leaders in Learning awards ceremony held at the Library of Congress’ Jefferson Building and began his remarks rather bluntly: “I am the only one here who knows precisely how his obituary will read: Nick Clooney, brother of famous singing icon/movie star Rosemary Clooney, father of Oscar-winning actor/producer/director George Clooney, died today. …”

Nick Clooney, who served as master of ceremonies, has seen his career take him from stations WLWC to WCPO to WKRC to ABC daytime game show “The Money Maze” to WKRC to KNBC and so on and so on. So, as he looked out on Wednesday night’s crowd, which was full of folks from such places as AmericanLife TV Network, Time Warner Cable, A&E Television, Cox Communications, Insight Communications, Landmark Communications and the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, Clooney had this to say: “I’ve never been in the company of so many men and women who over the years have fired me.”
