Navy women heading to NCAA tournament

Navy?s women?s soccer team extended its record-setting season by defeating Colgate, 1-0, to capture the Patriot League title and earn the service academy?s first NCAA tournament bid since 2003.

Patriot League Co-Defensive Player of the Year Shelly Moeller scored the game?s lone goal in the seventh minute off an assist from Patriot LeagueOffensive Player of the Year, Meggie Curran. The win represents the second Patriot League tournament championship for Navy (21-1).

Despite Colgate leading in shots, 8-6, and in corner kicks, 7-3, the Raiders had trouble finding a goal. Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes had two saves against Colgate, which out shot the Midshipmen, 8-6 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Navy will find out today at 3 p.m. where it will play in the NCAA women?s soccer tournament when the tourney pairing are announced.

JOHNS HOPKINS MEN?S SOCCER: Max Venker scored six minutes into overtime as host Johns Hopkins (17-1-2) defeated Franklin & Marshall, 2-1 to win the Centennial Conference championship and secure a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Nick Kosik scored the Blue Jays? other goal in the 72nd minute before Franklin & Marshall?s Brandon Corday responded eight minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.

JOHNS HOPKINS WOMEN?S SOCCER: Sophomore Molly Steele gave Johns Hopkins all the offense it would need as the host-Blue Jays topped Swarthmore, 1-0, to win the Centennial Conference championship for the second year in a row.

The Blue Jays (17-2) now advance to their second straight NCAA Division III tournament.

TOWSON MEN?S SOCCER: No. 15 Towson (14-1-3) is hoping for an at-large bid to the 48-team men?s tournament after losing in a shootout to George Mason in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.

The loss snapped the Tigers? 10-game winning streak. Towson last made the tournament in 2001 as the automatic qualifier from the America East.

MARYLAND MEN?S SOCCER: Defending national champion Maryland must also wait to receive an at-large bid after the Terps lost to Duke in the Atlantic coast Conference semifinals, 1-0. Maryland fell to 15-4-1 with the loss.

Joe Germanese scored the lone goal for Duke, which defeated Wake Forest Sunday to win the ACC tournament title.
