Now that Willie Brown is out of politics — the former San Francisco mayor retired from the game in 2004 — he probably has lots of free time on his hands.
Which would explain why he dedicates a sizable amount of ink in his new book — “Basic Brown: My Life and Our Times” — to assessing the fashion of U.S. presidents.
George W. Bush: “He dresses like a small-town Texas country-club guy, but the people who dress him — his clothes are from Oxxford, a Chicago manufacturer whose clothes offer a more relaxed version of the old Brooks Brothers look — make sure his suits, blazers, trousers fit terrifically. No collar ever rolls up; no shirt point ever flies away.”
Bill Clinton: “Bill Clinton was dressed by Donna Karan. He too was always appropriately dressed, though his fluctuating weight sometimes disrupted the fit. Helooked very distinguished at times. He was conscious of what he was wearing, as is Hillary Clinton. But Bill was never a fashion plate.”

Ronald Reagan: “Ronald Reagan had a look completely different than George Bush or Bill Clinton. Always a perfect fit, old-Hollywood style. He was impeccably dressed, fabulously so. He had a wardrobe sense from his days in the movies and on TV. He knew just what to choose. Even as governor of California, he was always meticulously dressed in that high Hollywood glamor style. He didn’t look like a dandy dude; he just looked incredibly well-turned out. He even wore a pocket square in his coat pocket — the mark of a truly well-dressed man. His pocket squares weren’t pointed; they were square and level. But they always had color. And they completed a wardrobe. Reagan was a star!”
Uh, thanks Willie.
