Mystics to get first taste of Currie

Just like most of the country, the Mystics got a couple days off during Memorial Day weekend, so they aren’t quite sure how the arrival of guard Monique Currie and the loss of center Chasity Melvin will shake out in tonight’s visit to the current WNBA champions.

“[The coaching staff] is really just trying to get me on the same page with everyone, trying to learn the system and run the plays so that I can come in and fit in with the team,” said Currie, who admitted she hadn’t seen Washington’s first three games. “I know I’m expected to come in here and contribute.”

One post player sure to see more minutes is 6-foot-4 center Nakia Sanford, who has been thrust into Melvin’s position and could be primed to build on the career highs she set in every category last season.

“I’m still kind of adjusting mentally, but it’s a good opportunity for me so I’m looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen,” said Sanford. “I consider [Melvin] to be my mentor because I played under her for so many years, and I feel like I developed playing behind her.”
