Ray Liotta’s hometown is working on a way to remember the actor, who died last week at the age of 67, with a reported nod to his role in Field of Dreams.
The Township of Union, New Jersey, is considering naming a local youth baseball field in Liotta’s honor, according to a report.
In the 1989 sports drama, Liotta played the baseball star “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, whose ghost visits Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, while building a baseball field.
“We are allowing the family and loved ones time to grieve and process his untimely death before we make any definitive decisions,” Mayor Manuel Figueiredo said, noting that “the Township of Union is exploring various options on how best to honor/remember Ray Liotta.”
Ray Liotta, who was also known for his role in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, was announced dead on May 26. The actor died in his sleep in the Dominican Republic, where he was shooting the film Dangerous Waters, according to Deadline.

Devastated to hear the news of Ray Liotta’s passing. While he leaves an incredible legacy, he’ll always be “Shoeless Joe Jackson” in my heart. What happened that moment in the film was real. God gave us that stunt. Now God has Ray. pic.twitter.com/JQmk1PsuSK

“Devastated to hear the news of Ray Liotta’s passing,” Field of Dreams costar Kevin Costner wrote on Twitter. “While he leaves an incredible legacy, he’ll always be ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson’ in my heart.”
Costner shared a video clip from the baseball movie showing Liotta’s character hitting the ball with one shot, almost hitting Costner, before a second ball flies out into the field of corn.
“What happened in that moment in the film was real,” Costner said. “God gave us that stunt. Now God has Ray.”
