‘F*** Clarence Thomas’: Lori Lightfoot curses Supreme Court justice at Pride event

The mayor of Chicago had an obscene message for one of the Supreme Court justices who ruled in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, yelled, “F*** Clarence Thomas,” in front of a crowd at the Pride in the Park festival in the city’s Grant Park over the weekend in response to the Supreme Court justice’s opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. The remark was condemned by several mayoral challengers to Lightfoot, but the city’s first openly gay mayor stood by her comments on Monday.

“Now, we know what happened with the Supreme Court yesterday, and if you read Clarence Thomas’s concurrence, he said,” Lightfoot said on stage before being interrupted by someone in the crowd who shouted at the mayor, to which she replied, “Thank you. F*** Clarence Thomas. He thinks that we are going to stand idly by while they take our rights — our right to marry, our right to have children, our right to live.”

The audience largely cheered the mayor’s curse against Thomas, but many 2023 mayoral election hopefuls rebuked Lightfoot.

Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas said the comment was “pretty embarrassing” and “almost trying to agitate people to violence,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Businessman Willie Wilson echoed Vallas, telling the paper that “using that kind of language just, in my opinion, encourages violence.”

Chicago alderman and mayoral candidate Roderick Sawyer said that while he “shares the concern,” Lightfoot’s comment was “just horrible.”

Mayoral challenger Ja’Mal Green accused Lightfoot of using the Dobbs ruling to “lure voters” while ignoring violent crime in the city.

“We need solutions right now to what’s going on … right here at home. But instead, she would rather grandstand onstage using this language because she knew it would get a certain reaction so she can get her approval numbers up. But our babies are dying still right now,” Green told the Chicago Sun-Times.

On Monday, Lightfoot defended her weekend comment.

“I said what I said,” Lightfoot tweeted on Monday above an image of her standing in front of a crowd and pointing to a man wearing a pink shirt with the same vulgar message she directed at Thomas. It’s unclear if the photograph was from the same Pride event in which she cursed at Thomas.

In a concurring opinion in Friday’s ruling that paved the way for state abortion bans, Thomas wrote that the court should “correct the error” of rulings that protect same-sex marriage and contraception access.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to the office of the Chicago mayor for comment.
