Pelosi blames Trump 'sabotage' for Obamacare enrollment drop

Democrats are blaming the recent decline in Obamacare enrollments to "sabotage" by the Trump administration.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Trump's executive actions since taking office, including scaling back advertising for the law, have caused the drop in enrollments in 2017. Pelosi, D-Calif., called the moves part of "a cynical ad willful campaign" to depress enrollment.

Obamacare enrollments have dropped by about half a million people in 2017 compared to 2016, the Trump administration reported Wednesday.

"As of December 24, 11.5 million Americans had signed up for coverage in the marketplaces – about 300,000 more than at the same time in the previous year," Pelosi said. "But since taking power, Republicans have taken actions to push 2017 enrollment down."

The Trump administration has ordered the IRS to no longer enforce fines for people who do not buy insurance.

Pelosi said the moves to undermine Obamacare were executed by the Republican White House to "justify their disastrous bill" to repeal and replace the law, which Pelosi played a major role in designing and passing in the House.

The law's healthcare marketplaces have begun to collapse, however, and for those purchasing individual plans, premiums and deductibles have risen sharply. Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said Pelosi does not blame reduced enrollment on those problems.

Hammill said healthcare enrollment was "on track" to increase by 300,000 through the end of December, then it decreased when Trump took office. He added that 85 percent of those enrolled in the exchanges receive tax subsidies.

"Canceling much of the advertising and creating confusion with a poorly worded exec order has taken a toll," he said.
