Mike Pence kicks back ‘every Friday night’ with O’Doul’s non-alcoholic beer, wife says

Vice President Mike Pence’s wife Karen shared a surprising and illuminating set of facts about her husband Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference, including that he relaxes on Friday night with pizza and a bottle of alcohol-free beer.

“Number one: If it’s Friday night, we better be having pizza for dinner. Supreme thin crust with an O’Doul’s. Every Friday night,” the second lady told a friendly crowd in suburban Maryland.

O’Doul’s is one of the best-known non-alcoholic drinks that’s described as a beer. A description on Wal-Mart’s website says it is “an all natural, full bodied, premium non-alcoholic malt beverage.”

Pence reportedly avoids mixed-gender events where alcohol is served if his wife isn’t present. That practice, reported last year by the Washington Post, elicited public curiosity, but also mockery.

Karen Pence’s other facts about the vice president included that he’s a “cartoon artist” who drew a weekly doodle for publication in law school, and that he would buy a horse if he could.

“He has always wanted a horse. And I think riding horses is really the only place he truly relaxes,” she said.

Some of her examples were easier to guess. Pence also respects feedback from his children, she said, and “he loves a good book, especially the Good Book.”
