WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s Internet access was cut on Sunday evening by Ecuador, the organization said on Twitter.
“Julian Assange’s Internet link has been intentionally severed by a state party. We have activated the appropriate contingency plans,” WIkiLeaks said. The group added later in the day, “We can confirm Ecuador cut off Assange’s internet access Saturday, 5pm GMT, shortly after publication of Clinton’s Goldman Sachs speechs.”

The announcement came hours after rumors had begun circulating about the meaning behind cryptic messages sent on Sunday. WikiLeaks had tweeted 64-character “pre-commitment” keys called “John Kerry” “Ecuador” and “UK FCO.” Some observers speculated the tweets were triggered by a “dead man’s switch” resulting from Assange’s death, an event the group may have planned for by releasing more information about those three issues.
