MSNBC: Sec. Duncan ‘sounds like a Republican’

Education Secretary Arne defended President Obama’s executive waiver of No Child Left Behind by criticizing the failure of “top-down” government from Washington D.C. today in an appearance on Morning Joe that prompted the MSNBC host to tell Duncan he “kind of sound[s] like a Republican.”

Here’s Duncan’s opening pitch explaining why the No Child Left Behind is a bad law:

We basically want to get out of the way of the states and we think the law, as the president said, had some good intent but there are many, many, basically, fatal flaws in it today. Its far too punitive; many, many ways to fail; no rewards for success; very prescriptive, top-down from Washington, led to a dumbing down of  standards; led to a narrowing of the curriculum. Our children need a well rounded curriculum. We can fix all those things, we’re going to do that, we’re going to keep a high bar. But we have to give states the distance – great teachers great educators – room to move, can’t keep beating down on them from Washington. That’s what’s going to change.

That’s change I can believe in.

As Duncan continued talking about NCLB, Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski interjected, “‘Get government out of the way’ – you kind of sound like a Republican!”

If only President Obama would see the problems inherent in “top-down [government] from Washington” as they relate to economic policy and health care reform.
