Clinton grabs 9-point lead in Michigan

Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump in Michigan has grown to 9 points, 41-32, according to a new survey for The Detroit News.

The Glengariff Group’s survey for the Detroit News showed Clinton’s lead expanding from 4 points in May, 37-33, as voters’ questions about the GOP nominee’s preparedness have harmed his standing in the poll.

“He’s sitting in the cellar right now, and they’re going to have to do something to dramatically turn this around,” Richard Czuba, president of the Glengariff Group Inc. polling firm, told the Detroit News. “If I were a Republican running on this ticket right now, I’d be beyond nervous.”

Sixty-one percent of likely voters surveyed said Trump is ill-prepared to be president, a number that swells to 67 percent when only women are asked. Clinton has a 21-point lead among female voters.

The new poll shows third-party candidates gaining little traction in Michigan thus far. The Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson polled at 8 points and the Green Party’s Jill Stein earned 3 points.

The Glengariff Group surveyed 600 likely Michigan voters from July 30-August 1. The poll had a 4 percentage point margin of error.
