Eber Martinez, a two-time Parade All-American midfielder from Gar-Field High who looked to be a prized late addition to the George Mason men’s soccer team, might not be eligible to play this fall.
Martinez’s name was taken off of the latest team roster, according to Patriots assistant director of sports information Jason Risley. After underperforming in summer school, his transcript is currently with the NCAA Clearinghouse, said Gar-Field boys soccer coach Mark Markiewicz.
Martinez was named 2006 Examiner Player of the Year after leading the Indians to the Group AAA Virginia state final and was an All-Examiner pick again last spring. He was a late pick-up for an already-strong Patriots’ 2007 recruiting class, which includes Fro Adu (Georgetown Prep), the younger brother of U.S. international player Freddy Adu.
Eber’s brother, Irvin Martinez, is a sophomore midfielder for the Patriots.
Last year, in George Mason’s second season with former Major League Soccer head coach Greg Andrulis at the helm, the Patriots finished 12-5-6, losing to Hofstra in penalty kicks in the Colonial Athletic Association final and in overtime to Bucknell in the first round of the NCAA championship.
Hokies’ Alvarez, Garner deemed eligible
Virginia Tech freshmen William Alvarez (Hylton High) and Ervin Garner (Oakton) have received certification from the NCAA Clearinghouse, the Hokies announced in a statement. Alvarez, a 2006 All-Examiner selection at offensive lineman, was one of the state’s top prospects as a senior. Garner, a wide receiver/defensive back, committed to Virginia Tech earlier this summer.
