House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Clinton’s use of a private email server and her questionable treatment of classified information “was not something that endangered our national security” and that the issue should be put to rest.
Pelosi, D-Calif., served as a longtime member of the House Intelligence Committee and told reporters she has extensive knowledge of the classification system.
“I know what I speak about classification and how careful we all are not to even acknowledge something we may have learned in a classified setting, and I don’t think Hillary Clinton would do that,” Pelosi said.
Clinton is under scrutiny for using her private email server and sending classified information in her personal emails. FBI Director James Comey has acknowledged Clinton indeed sent classified material and called her actions “extremely careless,” but declined to press charges. Notes from her interview with the FBI, released last week, show that Clinton didn’t seem to be aware of how classified or confidential materials were marked.
Pelosi and other Democrats have repeatedly defended Clinton, who now faces additional scrutiny by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
“She said she shouldn’t have done it that way,” Pelosi said, referencing the private server. “It raises questions and that is unfortunate. It’s much ado about something, but too much ado about it. I think we should just move on from this.”
