Donald Trump lashed out at Jeb Bush for being “weak” after a stinging blow from the former Florida governor on the businessman’s China trade policy.
“We don’t need a weak person being president of the United States,” Trump said during the Republican debate in Charleston, S.C., Thursday. “That is what we would get if we had Jeb.”
Right before, Bush noted that we need “someone with a steady hand being the president of the United States.”
Bush and Trump were at odds over the correct policy for dealing with China, with Trump floating a 45 percent tariff on Chinese goods entering the U.S.
“You absolutely have to get involved in China,” the bombastic businessman said. “They are taking so much of what we have in terms of jobs and in terms of money.”
Bush countered that tariffs will not only lead to “higher prices but also retaliation.”
He added what would happen to domestic companies such as Boeing.
“You think if the Chinese had a 45 percent tariff imposed on all their imports wouldn’t retaliate and start buying Airbuses? Of course they would,” he said.
