Maryland’s game Sunday against Clemson was far more dramatic for the school records set than for what happened on the court.
Forward Crystal Langhorne moved past guard Shay Doron into second on the school’s all-time career scoring list by finishing with 25 points in fifth-ranked Maryland’s 110-46 victory over Clemson in front of a crowd of 9,105 at Comcast Center.
Langhorne has scored 1,890 points during her illustrious career, and Ashleigh Newman moved into the record book by playing in her 123rd consecutive game, tying the school record set by Christy Winters in 1990.
“This was a fun game,” Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. “The exciting thing was to see where we’re getting at defensively. We’re getting better and better every game.”
Against Clemson, the Terrapins used an 11-0 run to highlight a stretch in which they outscored the Tigers, 34-16, during the final 12 minutes of the first half to put the game away.
Maryland (18-1, 2-0 ACC) led, 52-28, at intermission, and poured it on in the second half, outscoring Clemson, 58-18.
Forward Laura Harper had 27 points and11 rebounds and guard Kristi Toliver had 19 points and 10 assists for Maryland, which scored 45 points off 26 turnovers. Maryland goes for its ninth straight win Thursday night at 7 at Boston College (12-3, 1-0).
Guard Sthefany Thomas finished with nine points for Clemson (7-9, 0-1).
“No matter how big the lead is we want to play as hard as we can no matter what,” Langhorne said. “The seniors have learned a lesson from last year [after getting upset by Mississippi in the NCAA Tournament] and we don’t want anything like that to happen again.”
MARYLAND NOTES
Maryland forward Jade Perry was suspended for the game by Frese for a “violation of team rules,” but Perry is expected to play on Thursday.
