As of a few days ago, Michael “Spike” Williams was a candidate for Virginia’s Senate, but in a campaigning change of heart, he’s now running for Fairfax County Board Chairman against incumbent Sharon Bulova, D-At Large.
Barring further entries, Williams, a Republican, will face off against Bulova in November’s general election.
In campaign material that’s quite polished considering his — and his party’s — last-minute switch, Williams calls out the county for a “spending problem,” chiding it for spending more than four states (the county’s 1 million population is larger than seven states).
The board’s Democratic majority, he said, displays “a lack of understanding of what it takes to create jobs and economic opportunity and they haven’t provided the visionary leadership that Fairfax County must have to continue to attract world class corporations. Without a vibrant corporate community, our residents are left holding the bag.”
No one would fault Williams’s high expectations, but on the topic of the county’s corporate community, he failed to mention one more county-to-state comparison: According to the county’s economic development authority, Fairfax has more companies on the Fortune 500 than do 31 states.
