Members of the Congressional Black Caucus will commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., at an event in Ferguson, Mo., on Sunday.
Rep. G.K. Butterfield, the CBC chairman, will lead the delegation, who will attend a special church service in honor of King “and to show support for increasing civic participation in the local community.”
Monday is a federal holiday in honor of King’s birthday.
The CBC has been vocal in Congress about the Ferguson unrest. They staged floor speeches in support of protesters and have called for federal oversight of police aimed at improving civil rights protections.
Ferguson had been the scene of rioting and protests following the August death of Michael Brown, who was unarmed when he was shot by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. More civic unrest erupted in November when a grand jury did not indict Wilson in Brown’s death. Wilson has since quit the police force.
The service will be held at Wellspring Church in Ferguson.
