ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A $12.3 million project led by a University of Michigan professor aims to boost the design of advanced materials.
The Ann Arbor school announced the effort Wednesday led by John Allison, a professor of materials science and engineering. The project is funded by an $11 million, 5-year grant from the Department of Energy and $1.3 million from the university. It aims to cut the time it takes to develop such materials.

The grants establish a DoE Software Innovation Center called the PRedictive Integrated Structural Materials Science Center, or PRISMS.
The federal funding comes from the Materials Genome Initiative, which aims to speed up the ways scientists and engineers discover, develop and manufacture new materials.
