BOONE, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz vowed Monday to overturn President Obama’s upcoming executive order on guns.
During his first stop on his six-day bus tour through Iowa, Cruz told supporters that he will repeal any “illegal and unconstitutional” action that the president takes.
“If I’m elected president, let me tell you what I intend to do on the first day in office,” Cruz told a packed crowd in Boone, Iowa Monday. “The first thing I intend to do is rescind every single illegal and unconstitutional executive action.”
Obama planned to continue his push for unilateral action Monday while meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to “discuss the options” available. Obama also has a town hall set up for Thursday on the issue, which CNN will carry.
“President Obama is talking about this week issuing yet another executive order trying to go after our right to keep and bear arms,” Cruz said, which prompted a chorus of boos from the crowd.
“He can abuse his power all he wants. He has a phone and he has a pen,” Cruz said. “But if you live by the pen, you die by the pen. And my pen has got an eraser.”
Cruz’s stop in Boone was his first of five on the day throughout the Hawkeye State. In total, Cruz will host 28 events over the course of the six-day trip, during which he looks to cement his spot atop the GOP field in Iowa.
