Clyburn: Biden ‘probably the leader’ in South Carolina among 2020 Democrats

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., says voters in his state like former Vice President Joe Biden best of the 20 Democratic presidential candidates.

“I have talked to people here in South Carolina and I believe that at this point in time, Joe Biden is probably the leader,” Clyburn told ABC “This Week.” “The question is whether or not he can maintain that lead.”

Biden jumped into the race last week, marking the third time he has run for the highest office in the country.

Polling from two days prior to Biden’s Thursday announcement indicates he was the favorite among Democratic votes. A RealClearPolitics average of surveys shows Biden has 29% of support, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 23%.

Clyburn, who has been in Congress 26 years, said it will be imperative for candidates to impress non-urban voters in the 2020 election. “Democrats are going to have to improve our status among rural voters,” Clyburn said.
