Sen. Bernie Sanders Monday called on President-elect Trump to “reassure” Americans he will not make cuts to Social Security.
Sanders, an independent who ran in the Democratic primary against Hillary Clinton, said Trump should repeat his campaign promise to keep Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid intact.
While Trump has not advocated for changes to entitlement programs, House Republicans have called for reforms and reductions aimed at keeping the programs solvent.
“At the very least, now is the time for Mr. Trump to reassure the American people that he will keep the campaign promise he made when he said, ‘I was the first and only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,'” Sanders said. “Mr. Trump, keep your promise.”
Sanders said people are nervous about possible entitlement cuts under a Republican-led Congress and presidency. “In my view, we should be expanding Social Security, not cutting it,” Sanders said.
Trump said during the GOP primary it is his “absolute intention” to leave Social Security untouched and use revenue from economic growth to prevent entitlements from running out of money.
