Cops, the reality television show that followed police officers in the line of duty, is over.
Paramount Network has canceled the show which was scheduled to debut its thirty-third season next week, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The program had initially been pulled from the schedule following the death of George Floyd, but the network does not plan to bring it back.
“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Paramount Network’s Spike TV picked up Cops in 2013 after it ended a 25-season run on Fox, the network on which it originally launched in 1989. The show had faced scrutiny over accusations that they glorified violence and for the way it depicts police tactics.
Old episodes of Cops currently air on WGN America and the streaming service Pluto TV. WGN America does not plan to renew its commitment to the television show after its current contract expires at the end of the month.
A&E also pulled last week’s episodes of Live PD, while Discovery’s ID channel said a similar show, Body Cam, is also on pause.
Floyd was killed at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers. His death has sparked nationwide protests seeking to highlight institutional racism and police brutality of nonwhite people.
