Easter Bunny interrupts Biden in hare-raising White House scene

President Joe Biden’s message discipline was saved by a furry creature at the White House on Monday.

Biden began to speak about Afghanistan and Pakistan when he was interrupted by the Easter Bunny at a White House event. The chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan marked the beginning of the president’s slide in the polls.

The costumed critter swooped in, waved, and then appeared to lead the president away from his interlocutor. “Oh, OK!” Biden shouted.

Republicans began circulating the clip on Twitter, suggesting that the Easter Bunny was leading Biden. There were also jokes and some serious speculation about the bunny’s identity.

Biden has faced regular criticism over his availability to the public dating back to the presidential campaign. Democrats are defending razor-thin congressional majorities in this year’s midterm elections. If Republicans retake either chamber of Congress, it will complicate the enactment of Biden’s agenda.

Monday saw the return of the White House Easter Egg Roll after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. An estimated 30,000 people were on hand for the event despite the cold, drizzly weather. Members of Biden’s family were present.

“It means so much to see and hear the children and all the families show up to be here today,” Biden said from the South Portico. “The joy, the laughter, and the occasional, at least with my young grandson, who’s only 2, the occasional, ‘There’s the Easter Bunny’ — a little startled sometimes.”
