Four dead and 10 injured in California banquet hall shooting

Four people were killed, and 10 were wounded in a shooting at a Stockton, California, banquet hall on Saturday evening, county police and local officials said.

A family gathering was being held at the venue when the shooting occurred, and victims included children and adults. The shooter remains at large, and several California agencies are searching for the suspect, San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas confirmed Saturday evening.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited. Early indications suggest this may be a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities. Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances leading up to this tragedy,” San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media update.

Police were called just before 6 p.m. on Saturday. Local officials encouraged anyone with information about the incident or with knowledge of a suspected shooter to relay information.

“If you have any information as to this individual, reach out immediately. And if you are this individual, turn yourself in immediately,” Freitas said in a press briefing Saturday evening.

Christina Fugazi, mayor of the Central Valley city east of San Francisco and south of Sacramento, encouraged witnesses to call Crime Stoppers if they wish to leave an anonymous tip.

“This is Thanksgiving weekend. This is when families come together, celebrate, share memories, give each other love. Unfortunately, tonight, Heaven is a little bigger with the individuals, children and adults, that unfortunately did not make it. Stockton is better than this,” Fugazi said.

The district attorney also confirmed Saturday that his office was providing support to the victims of the shooting.

“My office is also working very, very hard with all the other agencies providing support, including my investigation unit, my chief of homicide and my victim witness advocates, they’re providing assistance to the families and their victims,” Freitas said.
