PHILADELPHIA — Rep. Alan Grayson shoved a reporter Tuesday afternoon after he was asked to respond to allegations that the Florida congressman abused his now-ex-wife for nearly 20 years.
The confrontation between the congressman and Politico’s Edward-Isaac Dovere took place at a public event held during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.
On the same day as the altercation, Politico reported Grayson’s ex-wife alleged she was the victim of domestic abuse over a period of two decades.
“Rep. Alan Grayson’s ex-wife repeatedly went to police with accusations of domestic abuse over a two-decade period, according to documents she has provided to POLITICO, revelations that come as the Florida congressman enters the final weeks of his Democratic primary campaign for Senate,” the report read.
“Lolita Grayson called police on her husband at least two times in Virginia and two more times in Florida, sought medical attention on at least two occasions and said that, in one instance, he had threatened to kill her,” it added, citing police records.
In Philadelphia, Dovere questioned the congressman about the report, and things turned ugly quickly. Politico posted video of the exchange.
Grayson shoved Dovere repeatedly, and he threatened to report him to the Capitol Police.
The congressman denied he touched anyone, though footage of the incident shows he clearly did.
Dovere told the Washington Examiner’s media desk, “As the congressman himself said, he attended a public event. He’s a public official appearing at a public event. I attempted to ask him questions about the serious allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-wife.”
Spokespeople for Grayson did not respond to the Examiner’s multiple requests for comment.
