Obama: No more Monopoly money; deficits have consequences

Amidst President Obama’s congratulatory speech to the US Senate for clearing the 60-vote hurdle for the health care bill was a sneak preview of his audacity to rebrand himself as a deficit hawk.

From his remarks today:

But as I’ve said, in the long run, we can’t continue to spend as if deficits don’t have consequences; as if waste doesn’t matter; as if the hard-earned tax dollars of the American people can be treated like Monopoly money. That’s what we’ve seen time and time again. Washington has been more concerned about the next election than the next generation.

We’ve noted before on Belway Confidential that Obama is planning to ring in the New Year casting himself as a deficit hawk, but it appears that he cannot wait until after he signs the $871 billion health care bill.
