When candidate Obama said that he would pursue a new form of diplomacy, it was hard to predict that it meant spending a billion dollars on a moat-adorned embassy in London. And even harder to believe that he would spurn a tax in London that he would consider implementing in the U.S.:
[The budget for the building] also does not include the 17.5 per cent VAT demanded by the Treasury on all buildings in Britain and which the US has refused to pay.
Perhaps because a 17.5 percent VAT is incredibly expensive. It’s hard not to stand with the administration in refusing to pay unfair taxes to the British (particularly without representation, natch), but at the same time, why levy a similar tax on citizens here?
