I find this result from the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll a bit disturbing:
A third of Americans — 33 percent — say that Trump’s relationship with Putin is “too friendly,” while 24 percent disagree. But among Democrats, 63 percent deem the relationship “too friendly,” while just seven percent of Republicans say the same.
The divide is even more stark specifically among Clinton and Trump voters. Sixty-nine percent of Clinton voters — but just five percent of Trump voters — say that Trump is too cozy with Putin.
This isn’t about delegitimizing Trump’s presidency. He won, fair and square. He’s going to be the president. The Russians didn’t mess with the vote count.
No, the issue here is simply that a Russian leader who directs kidnappings and assassinations both at home and abroad, just as the Soviets once did, is apparently and disturbingly admired by our next president. That’s not a good thing. And even if you voted for Trump, partisanship shouldn’t blind you to the fact that this is both real and dangerous.
