Texas strongman breaks world bench-press record with mammoth lift

A powerlifter from Texas broke the world record last month for most pounds bench pressed, lifting 1,125 pounds during the IPA National Powerlifting Championships in York, Pennsylvania.

Tiny Meeker, a 50-year-old strongman who weighs 320 pounds and runs Metroflex-Houston in Kingwood, Texas, surpassed the previous record set earlier this year by Jimmy Kolb at 1,120 pounds. Meeker holds over 75 world records, including in 2013 when he became the first person to bench press over 1,100 pounds.

“To me, this was unfinished business,” Meeker told local news station ABC-13. “I wanted to be the first guy, and still want to be the first guy, to bench 1,200 pounds.”

Meeker, a 26-time world champion, said the record this year was more emotional than previous victories because it was the second competition since he survived three car crashes in 2017.

“I tore my labrum, messed up my hips, my hamstring, my knee, and my neck,” Meeker said.

Meeker was also hospitalized for atrial fibrillation in 2019, further preventing him from returning to his training. Meeker has been lifting weights since he was in high school.

Meeker said he plans to meet his goal of pressing 1,200 pounds in February 2022.
