Howard County School Board candidate Sandra French received a surprise contribution to her campaign, givingher the top spot of most funds raised during the period from Aug. 28 to Oct. 22.

“It makes me feel wonderful,” said French, a former county school board member.

Henry Ziegler, a Columbia resident, forked over $500 to support French. Ziegler “just looked at my record on the Internet and made the contribution,” she said.

French?s son, Matthew French, of Falls Church, Va., also surprised his mother with a $100 donation to her campaign. Allen Dyer, an outspoken supporter of School Board meetings being more open to the public, came in second and changed his declaration to raise more than $1,000 on Sept. 26.

“We decided to get more signs and do some media advertising,” said Dyer, about his partnership with fellow candidate Di Zou to boost their standings in the general election.

Incumbent Joshua Kaufman was third in funds raised.

“I did some printing of leaflets, and printed materials for my poll workers,” he said.
