Harvard students protest Betsy DeVos appearance

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos spoke at Harvard University on Thursday night amid mostly silent protests from students.

As DeVos spoke, students held signs reading “white supremacist,” “protect survivors,” and “Our students are not 4 sale” during her speech at the Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics.

She did not interrupt her speech to address the protesters.

DeVos spoke about advocating for charter schools and rolling back campus sexual assault guidelines put in place by the Obama administration.

“I credit the former administration for having raised the issue of campus sexual assault,” DeVos said when asked about the change in policy, NBC Washington reported. “I have said it before and I’ll say it again. One sexual assault is one too many. By the same token, one student that is denied due process is one too many.”

The Education Department recently rescinded the previous administration’s sexual assault guidance and is conducting a review of Title IX. The move was met with much criticism from campus advocates and sexual assault survivors.

Harvard is one of over 300 schools under investigation by the government for civil rights violations regarding sexual assault, which were first announced in 2014. Earlier this month, the Harvard Crimson reported that the investigation is ongoing more than three years after the Office for Civil Rights started the probe.
