RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A judge has approved a settlement that will allow about 600 active and retired Richmond police officers to collect some $7 million in unpaid overtime.
U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson signed off on the deal Friday.
The officers claimed in a lawsuit that the city erroneously applied a federal law that says overtime kicks in after 86 hours worked in a two-week period. Virginia law requires overtime to start at 80 hours. Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli sided with the officers in the dispute.
The city has agreed to follow the state law from now on.
